Over the whole of the last academic year a team of students (from year 9) with teacher leaders (Ms Daynes & Ms Carey) built their own kit car. That in itself was a massive achievement and that is why it is very proudly the central feature on the front page of our new style website.
But it got even better on Sunday 10th September 2023 when Team Millais with Car 272 competed in the GreenPower Car Race at Dunsfold Aerodrome, in Surrey.
They started the day not knowing whether they would be able to race, as the car had to pass its MOT and with some tweaks they were given the green light and were race ready. They were so determined on the day to do well but the suspense was huge hoping and willing the car would keep going and finish the course.
There were 55 teams in total and some of them had more than one car and were veterans of the Green Car Power Race. This was Millais’ very first time competing. It was a serious event and very technical. All fingers were crossed and Car 272 did not break down. Every 5 laps they changed driver, driving for 1.5 hours in total and completing as many laps as possible within the time. We finished 32nd out of 55, a very pleasing result and a trophy for participation. We were the only all female team and leaders in the competition.
The parent and sibling supporters were amazing on the day arriving for 7.30am and ending well after 6pm. There was such a feeling of camaraderie and pride as we willed car 272 to the finishing line. We are looking forward to the next round of races in April 2024!
